A PASSENGER jet landed safely after it was struck by lightning over Melbourne last night.
The inbound Emirates flight EK407 from Auckland was hit as it readied to land, flying over St Kilda just before 7.30pm.
An Air Services Australia spokeswoman said despite reporting a lightning strike to the Boeing 777, the international flight landed normally and there was no damage to the craft.
Emirates spokesman Matt Howard confirmed the incident and said passenger jets were commonly struck by lightning.
''The necessary checks were conducted and the aircraft was deemed undamaged. The aircraft departed from Melbourne, continuing its planned journey to Dubai as scheduled. No passengers were affected. The safety of our passengers and crew is always of paramount importance,'' Mr Howard said.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Rod Dixon said thunderstorms briefly struck Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs about 7.15pm last night.
