Virgin Australia's new A330s collide while under tow on runway ahead of official launch

URGENT repairs are being made to Virgin Australia's brand new A330 after its wing clipped a stationary Jetstar aircraft at Melbourne Airport on Thursday.
The Virgin A330, which is due to make its first commercial flight in Australia on Tuesday, was being towed into position at a maintenance hangar when the collision occurred.

The wing tip of the aircraft was slightly damaged, as was the cone top of the Jetstar aircraft, also an A330.

No one was on board either aircraft at the time and no one was hurt in the incident.

A Jetstar spokesman said they were still assessing the damage to their aircraft.

"It will be repaired before it returns to service," he said.

It is understood Virgin is having parts flown from overseas to make the necessary repairs ahead of next Tuesday's flight.

The new A330 features a revolutionary wet look which is designed to cut down on the need for washing and makes the aircraft lighter.

Virgin took delivery of the aircraft from Airbus in Toulouse on April 27.

The wide-bodied aircraft will service the Sydney-Melbourne and Sydney-Perth, Melbourne-Perth routes for Virgin Australia which is trying to grab a bigger share of the business market.
